The Iconic Game at 20 – How a Plastic Axe United the Gap Among Rock Generations

Marking two decades after Guitar Hero first launched in North America, giving everyday gamers the means to feel like rock legends. Figuratively speaking, but try telling that someone who has mastered the epic lengthy guitar solo in front of an enthusiastic crowd of friends.

Developed by the developers, Guitar Hero gave players a guitar-shaped controller to match on-screen cues scrolling down the display in time with a song. Each riff corresponded to particular chords, creating the sensation of a genuine live show.

Harmonix had already tried its hand with rhythm games before partnering with RedOctane, later purchased by the gaming giant in 2006. Together, they established the groundwork for a surprising massively profitable franchise that had a significant influence on numerous musicians featured, introducing classic bands to a new generation of gaming enthusiasts.

Michael Dornbrook, former COO of Harmonix, remembers the initial budgetary hurdles in securing the recordings – despite the fact the first two games primarily featured rerecorded tracks.

“We rerecorded all the music because the cost prohibitive,” he says. “Even with the publishing rights alone, it proved extremely difficult. We failed to secure acts such as the Who – RedOctane had virtually no money, and our team was fairly certain it would fail. But once the game became a hit, album purchases and radio play were going up, all artists desired to be in.”

He continues: “One of the remarkable aspects was the number of mothers and fathers got in touch expressing gratitude for introducing their children to the songs they adored. It evolved into a multigenerational thing.”

Timeless Music Finds Younger Fans

Irish group the Answer included Never Too Late in the 2008 release Guitar Hero World Tour. Lead musician Paul Mahon recalls the way the game revived classic rock to the forefront: “Guitar Hero provided a larger, younger audience. Generally this had been seen as music that was past it, however once it got included in the title young people were finding it, suddenly it became trendy. This validated it, and got rid of the outdated tag. It provided all our music renewed popularity.”

At that time, the Answer’s debut album remained not available in the US, meaning the game served as a primary platform of discovery for the band as they went on a North American tour opening for AC/DC. “The roadies had on Never Too Late during travel, and several knew us from Guitar Hero,” he notes.

Rock’s Heavyweight Titles Enduring Impact

Rock’s biggest acts quickly capitalised on the series’ popularity, with Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen featuring in dedicated spin-off titles centered around each band’s catalogue and associated stories, visuals and rock’n’roll mythology. For example, the Aerosmith edition, it was said earned the group more money compared to their records. It sold well over 500,000 units in its first week, while demand for Aerosmith’s music saw an increase significantly during an era when the music business faced decline.

Guitar Hero still motivates quick-handed dedication within the community. Earlier this year, an online personality achieved a remarkable feat of DragonForce’s the challenging track – a notoriously difficult power-metal song popularized through the game – using a fan-made version, a no-cost alternative with almost identical gameplay and extensive personalization features. This track is difficult even in the hardest setting, not to mention performed at increased tempo while hitting a single one of its near 4,000 notes. The streamer stated requiring months of practice of practice.

“Guitar Hero is a fun, imaginary experience. If you play other games, that doesn’t mean you ought to pick up a real gun and go to war,” notes musician Herman Li.

The band previously completed a profitable run before their hit appeared in the third game, but Li says it made them a household name. “I recall our distributors informing us that our records were moving like crazy,” he says. “It exploded when we next toured, and we were playing just before top acts at the event.”

Indeed, DragonForce’s exposure from Guitar Hero was so immense that it has threatened to eclipsing everything else the band has done. Last year, the track was used in promotional material for Despicable Me 4. “In the past I felt otherwise, but I’ve made peace with it,” Li says. “Should you just hear one DragonForce song, that's fine – each person has a unique musical journey and I’m glad we’ve been part in fans' experiences”.

Enduring Impact from the Plastic Guitar

The best marketing, whether it’s for automobiles, apparel or video games, goes further than selling something – it inspires a desire. Was the game able to harness this? “That’s exactly what our team trying to create,” Dornbrook says. “That thrill of performing as a music icon in the spotlight. From day one, the co-founders felt that humans have a natural urge to create songs, and they wanted to use technology to enable everyone to participate”.

Most of Guitar Hero games came out over a mere five-year period between 2005 and 2010, including derivative titles such as the DJ version, including a turntable controller, and Band Hero. After that, the publisher’s interest in plastic instruments waned, except for a brief comeback in 2015.

Titles such as Clone Hero and newer releases have maintained the scene active, with set to be a new product from the founders on the way. Recently formed developers has entered work on its debut rhythm-based title. Original co-founders are both involved as special advisers. Are gamers ready to embrace a new entry following the classic?

“We thought those games might become like Madden where you can update every year,” Dornbrook says. “There’s so much fresh tracks it could remain perennially popular, so I’ve always been optimistic. There’s no reason why it can’t continue for future fans.”
